Many people have accused me of not being adventurous in life to which I retort that I'm just carefull. I never gamble and don't do any extreme sports. So when I saw this new Hot Pocket SUB (as in submarine sandwhich) in my grocer's aisle I must admit that I was intriqued, but didn't go for it at first. This past weekend I tempted fate and purchased the new Philly Cheese Steak Hot Pockey SUB.

The first thing I noticed was that it was not crispy & flakey much as all the other pockets claim to be. Upon further review I discovered that this was in fact by design. The "Made with soft bread" slogan emblazened on the packaging was my first hint. I must say that I really enjoyed it as it was a nice break from the normal hot pocket shell that I am used to. There was a nice mix of ingredients in this one that made for a very enjoyable eating experience. An eating experience that left both my hunger satisfied and my mind at ease knowing that I had defied the common perception of me.

Birds Of A Feather

Have you ever seen that Blind Melon video when the little bee girl finally finds all of the other bees? The kind of friend that you don't need to talk to for a couple of years yet the second you see each other again it's as if you saw them yesterday and you just slide back into the friendship. I have a couple of friends that fall into this category. One is my old pal Bill whom I went to school with back in the day. Him and his wife are expecting so I try to call every now and then to offer up any fatherly advise I can. The other is an old friend I call Beef & Cheddar.

B&C was the first flavor of hot pocket that I ever had. I would have to say that over the years at least 70% of all the pockets I have eaten where B&C although I had not had one in about a year. Just as with Bill, I found myself feeling as if I had one just yesterday and enjoyed my time with it.

I ask you, the reader to get back in touch with someone you haven't talked to in a while. An old friend that would appreciate a call out of the blue just to say hello. I can't promise you that it will satisfy your hunger the way B&C did for me, but I bet you will feel full of good feelings.

Chicken Quesadilla - LEAN Pocket

We are going into uncharted territory here. This one is a follow up to my previous post reviewing the normal version of this particular pocket.

Upon first bite I was delighted to find that the tortilla taste was still in tact from it's counterpart. FOr the most part it tasted incredibly simular to the normal version save for an unsusualy tangy aftertaste. I don't know that it was a planned flavor but rather a by product of the "leaning" process. It was enough to ruin my pocket experience and therefore can not in good concience recommend this pocket unless you are on some sort of diet.

The Drought Continues......

5th straight day eating ramen for lunch. Cooked in the same exact fashion as the first one. It was all there, every element one would seek in a perfectly cooked pocket. It crisped up nice, the cheese was evenly melted without getting to runny or undercooked, etc....

I must say that I came to the conclusion that this just isn't the right flavor for me. I also feel that sadly I must renege my previous post that had you the reading public believing that the sheer amount of ingredients was not a hinderence when it came to this particular flavor. I found myself feeling a bit let down by the fact that while each of the individual meats were good, there just simply was not enough of each to satisfy me.

As in life, too much of a good thing can sometimes be bad. The standard

Crips Factor: Perfect

At first I dismmised this pocket as a Beef And Cheddar knock off however after several bites I must say that this might be my new favorite pocket. What makes this pocket is the flaky crust. I'm not sure that there is a Beef & Cheddar flavored Croissant Pocket as I have only had the original.

Bottom line: Don't let the "Philly" aspect fool you, this is just a croissant version of the Beef & Cheddar, albeit a serious upgrade.

Four Cheese & Four Meat Pizza - Standard Pocket

Time Cooked: 1:40
Crisp Factor: Consistent from end to end.

I was a bit apprehensive with my normal 1:40 cooking time as the plethora of meats could have slowed cooking time. I was pleased to discover that it was the perfect amount of cooking time.

Initially I was quite suspect of the sheer amount of ingredients going on here. There was good meat distribution within the pocket however I found that the pizza sauce to meat ratio was a bit to much on the sauce side. Keep in mind that I usually order my actual pizza light on the sauce.

Overall this was a very enjoyable pocket and I have no problem recommending it.

Four Cheese Pizza Flavor Croissant Pocket

Time Cooked: 2:05

Crisp factor: A little soft when it first came out of the crisping sleeve, but quickly took on a nice balance of crispness and buttery soft croissant goodness.

About 1/4 ounce cheese oozed out of my pocket, as well as some of the butter and oil mixture. After a minute or so, the cheese that oozed out hardened onto my paper plate. I had to scrape the hardened cheese off my plate and it was delicious. Since I'm not diggin on the swine, the four cheese pizza croissant pocket is by far my favorite. And it absolutely shuts the regular four cheese pizza hot pocket down.

Chicken Quesadilla Flavor

Time cooked: 1 minute 40 seconds.

Crisp Factor: Part of the top were hardened from the microwaves.

A new flavor I hadn't tried. I give it a thumbs up. The crust had an interesting tortilla like taste to it which was a nice touch. As always I cut it in half in order to ease eatability & to cool off a little faster. Cutting in half also helps the crust/filling ratio as it all doesn't get pushed to the end.
